What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are educated and trained in accredited naturopathic medical universities. They diagnose, prevent and treat acute and chronic illness to restore and establish optimal health by supporting the person's inherent self-healing process. Rather than just suppressing symptoms, naturopathic doctors work to identify underlying causes of illness, and develop personalized treatment plans to address them (American Association of Naturopathic Physicians)

The six principles of naturopathic medicine that unite naturopathic physicians around the world are as follows: (https://aanmc.org/6-principles/)

  1. First Do No Harm
Core to all medical practice is the desire to help the human form and condition. NDs typically approach care by utilizing the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies. NDs will refer when the patient’s presentation is outside their scope or level of skill.
  2. The Healing Power of Nature
NDs recognize the value of our natural world in assisting the healing process. Not only do NDs utilize substances that originate in nature, but they also incorporate a healthy natural environment as foundational to human health. Naturopathic doctors recognize and harness the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself in order to guide patients to wellness and total health.
  3. Identify and Treat the Cause
There is a time and place for symptom suppression, however most naturopathic patients will benefit from identifying the underlying causes of illness and removing obstacles to cure.
  4. Doctor as Teacher
Naturopathic doctors elevate patient health literacy. That means that NDs are part of the team helping patients have a better understanding of what it takes to be and stay well. Through education and a trust-based relationship, patients better understand the steps they need to take to achieve and maintain health.
  5. Treat the Whole Person
Naturopathic doctors understand the interconnectedness of our body, our environment and our lifestyle on total health. It is only through this whole-person-based approach that NDs seek to restore balance and health.
  6. Prevention
Naturopathic medicine affirms that it is better to prevent illness and suffering whenever possible. Through their comprehensive practice, NDs combine all six principles in order to identify potential areas of imbalance and teach patients how to get well and stay well.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy utilizes energetic medicines to stimulate the body’s own ability to heal itself. Homeopathic remedies are pure medicinal agents obtained from plants, metals, minerals, and other natural organic sources. This makes them a great option for children, pregnancy, and any acute or chronic disease.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine focused on treating the individual with highly diluted substances that trigger the body’s natural system of healing. Based on your experience of your symptoms, you are then matched with the most appropriate remedy. It works on the principle of “like cures like” that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness. Scientifically it cannot yet be explained, but new theories in quantum physics are starting to shed some light on the process. What has been confirmed is that a precisely prescribed remedy can stimulate the body to cure itself.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting (BSP) is a therapy developed 20 years ago By Dr. David Grand, designed to help individuals access, process, and overcome trauma, negative emotions, and pain, including physical, stress-related, and psychologically induced physical pain. The main goal of this technique is to help the brain regulate and achieve balance through reprocessing negative experiences and rewiring emotional responses. Brainspotting was developed through Dr. David Grand's work with survivors of trauma. Many mental health professionals utilizing the approach have found it to be an effective treatment for various mental health concerns.

Injection Therapy

Trigger Point Injections (TPI)
Trigger points are loosely described as “hyper-irritable” knots within skeletal muscle and/or fascia that are painful to the touch. They can limit movement, cause moderate to severe pain and mimic other musculoskeletal conditions. Trigger point injections are a combination of vitamins and pain-relieving solutions (anesthetics) which are precisely delivered into these points of muscle tension. A series of injections are used to reduce pain and increase movement. TPI temporarily disrupts nerve signaling, breaking the cycle of pain. Lidocaine provides pain relief, and the vitamins activate the immune system to clean up the cellular debris that is one of the components of the muscle “knots”. Trigger point injections are more frequently administered. Additional treatments such as acupuncture, spinal and joint adjustments, physical therapy, and massage help to build on the injections’ benefits. We strive to identify and correct the cause of the trigger points while simultaneously relieving the nagging discomfort. Each person is different in how pain presents and together an individualized injection treatment plan is derived to help achieve health goals.

Prolotherapy
Simply summarized, prolotherapy is a minimally invasive injection procedure that stimulates the body’s
natural healing mechanism to repair chronically damaged tendons and ligaments. Prolotherapy comes
from the term “proliferative” therapy and involves injecting different types of medical grade solutions
into tender ligaments, tendons, and nearby joint spaces to promote an immune response. Inflammation is
the first phase of tissue repair and stimulates the body’s release of growth factors. The injections jump
start the wound-healing cascade in these weak or damaged connective tissues. The growth factors come
from our innate immune system and naturally help our own new cells to repair the damage. Since
prolotherapy stimulate the body’s self-healing mechanism to improve structure and function of the
ligaments and tendons, it is considered a safe, low-risk alternative to other invasive procedures such as
surgery.

Platelet Rich Plasma
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a type of prolotherapy whereby the patient’s own cells are used to create a
concentrated solution of immune cells, growth factors, and enzymes. When injected into and around a
joint space, the cells promote important tissue repair and ultimately self-directed healing. One of the most
important parts of PRP prolotherapy is the natural recruitment of stem cells into the area. Stem cells
promote collagen development which in turn helps with remodeling of damaged tissues to a healthier
state. PRP is an excellent non-surgical option for acute and chronic orthopedic injuries as well as aesthetic
medicine. Using our own naturally derived and innate cellular response improves function, reduces pain,
and provides a sense of wholeness. PRP is an excellent and safe option for patients to reach their lifestyle goals.
